HOUSESCELLI LAUGHING COYOTEThe HOUSES relate to CIRCUMSTANCES, to the area of life they represent (1st. house self- 2nd. house resources-etc.). The PLANETS relate to ACTIVITY (mercury to mentality, moon to emotions, etc.), and the SIGNS to FUNCTION (Virgo-methodical, Aries-leading,etc.). If you were to compare astrology to acting you would say: The PLANTS are the actors, the SIGNS are the roles they play and the HOUSES are the settings or situations in which the cast plays its roles. We will also introduce a method of organization using KEYWORDS. In various sources you can find keywords for the planets, houses, signs and temperament types as well. They can be used to help you synthesize this body of information and go on to give your own coherent delineation. Each house represents a basic field of activity. The meanings of the houses are modified when they are occupied with planets. It is important to realize from the beginnings that having no planet in a house does not mean that there is no activity in that area. No house is ever empty; each house has a planet that rules the sign on its cusp. Since there are twelve houses and only ten planets, you cannot possibly have a planet in every house. Ascendant - First house cusp - Outward personality Descendant - Seventh house cusp - Inner self Midheaven (MC) - Tenth house cusp - problems IC - Fourth house cusp - Ease of working The twelve signs of the zodiac show the positions along the ecliptic where the planets can be found on any date. These planetary positions don't change very much during a single day. However, the earth's rotation brings a new rising sign into play about every two hours. Remember the zodiac is fixed in space, it just seems to move across the sky because of the earth's rotation each day. The houses represent the different departments of life in which your planetary energies find their expressions. For example, your character and personality, which are set up by your planets in the different signs, will be directed either into personal or public matters, depending on whether they fall into the houses of the Northern Hemisphere, or Southern Hemisphere, respectively. Again you will be self-sufficient if they fall into the eastern houses or dependent on others is they fall into the western houses. Each house represents a cluster of interests and activities just as each sign represents a cluster of traits and approaches for dealing with those activities. The spheres of interest of each house is as follows:
FIRST HOUSEangular houseNatural Sign - ARIES Natural Ruler - MARS Keyword - IDENTITY A house of - LIFE The cusp of the first house is the ascendent or rising sign. It is one of the most important points in the natal chart, and it shows the exact degree and sign that was on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. The Earth's rotation causes one degree of the zodiac to rise above the eastern horizon approximately ever four minutes: for this reason, you can see how important it is to have an accurate birth time. The first house, and in particular the ascendent shows your personality, you natural disposition and tendencies, your individuality and the way you express yourself. It has to do with how we appear or the we come across, thus our appearance and personality. This is the essential stuff that bubbles up in us spontaneously and that is obvious to others as our trademark or activity. It shows how people see you and the way you want others to see you. It shows your approach to life, your worldly outlook, your appearance, bearing and the beginnings of all enterprises. This house rules our personal self and everything about us that draws a reaction from our surroundings or others. Your Rising sign is important for two reasons. First like your Sun sign, it serves to establish a basic pattern in your life. Where the Sun establishes your character, or who you really are, your Rising sign determines your personality , or what you show the world as you deal with it. Secondly it establishes the position of your houses in the zodiac. That's because your Rising sign marks the beginning of your first house . Here are descriptions of the personalities that go with each rising sign:
Aries - Outspoken Taurus - Reserved
Gemini - Talkative Cancer - Sympathetic
Leo - Dignified Virgo - Modest
Libra - Charming Scorpio - Intense

QualityStill another important grouping corresponds with the qualities of the signs, corresponding to the Cardinal, Fixed , or Mutable signs of the zodiac. The significance of a cluster of planets in a group of these houses is as follows:
Angular (Cardinal) Houses--Starting - Activities are self-starting for immediate effects. The angular houses are the first, fourth, seventh, and tenth. These angles correspond to east, west, north south. These are the angles or axes, of the horoscope. Plants in angular houses have great potential for dynamic action and their influences are intensified. In other words the hoses have cardinal qualities. Some books refer to planets in angular houses as accidentally dignified.
Succedent (Fixed) Houses--Controlling - Activities are aimed at managing and controlling things. They are the second, fifth, eight, eleventh. They are call succedent because that follow or succeed the angular house. They are not as powerful, but, just like the fixed signs they give stability and purpose. They are also the financial houses.
Cadent (Mutable) Houses--Changing Skills are acquired to improve relationships. They are the third, sixth, ninth, twelfth. These houses do not have as much opportunity for action as the angular house, nor do they confer great stability like the fixed houses, but they are adaptable and get along well with others. They are usually referred to as the mental houses. The intensity of a planet's influence on a house depends on the sign of the zodiac that happens to fall on that house in your zodiac. If Cardinal Signs are found in Angular (Cardinal) Houses, they strengthen the planetary energies flowing into the activities of the houses, etc. Another useful grouping of HOUSES corresponds with the grouping of houses into the four elements. The HOUSES can be grouped into fire, earth, water and air houses. The significance is as follows:
Individual (Fire) Houses - Life Identity (First, Fifth, Ninth). Activitie s focus on achieving life's aspirations.Temporal (Earth) Houses - Material Wealth (Second, Sixth, Tenth). Activities focus on meeting material needs. Relative (Air) Houses - Relationships (Third, Seventh, Eleventh). Activities focus on social contact and mind-sharing. Terminal (Water) Houses - Emotional (Fourth, Eighth, Twelfth). Activities focus on achieving emotional tranquility.
HINTYour Rising sign is the sign of the zodiac that was just coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment that you were born. If you were born at sunrise, your Rising sign would be the same as your sun sign. That's because the Sun sign tells you what part of the zodiac the Sun was in at that time. Since that was the part of the zodiac rising over the horizon at sunrise, it is also your Rising sign.
